After spending my summer filming for the Washington Independent’s video team, I thought I had concluded that film media was where it’s at. I loved the technological aspect, the creative aspect, and the perks of getting into political speaking engagements. I left my post as Washington’s most notorious intern against my will, as my tenure as a summer intern ended at the end of July.
I returned to Atlanta already making plans to return to Washington as soon as I graduate this December. I figured I would finish up my last few classes, find an internship, and continue working at a restaurant to save up money and pay rent. Easy enough, right?
Wrong. Due to my overachieving tendencies, I asked to be moved up to the higher-level production class. Why? Because I “wanted the challenge.” I took on more shifts working at the restaurant. Why? Because I “wanted to save up to move in December.” I prodded my way into an internship at 99X/Rock100. Why? Because “it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.” So, now I am busy 24/7 waiting tables, studying, reading, working at the radio station, doing promotions events for the radio station, going to class, and most of all: driving. A lot.
Perhaps I am delusional from my constant lack of sleep, but I love interning at the radio station. There isn’t much that will drag me out of bed at 7am on a Sunday, but I did just that last weekend to go work the Braves game for Rock100. Twice a week I get up early, fight rush hour traffic, and get to the radio station before my shift even starts..Because I love it. This Thursday I get to combine my love for filming and my love for radio by waking up at 6am to come help film Drivin n’ Cryin in the studio…And I can’t wait. I never would have thought I would say the words “I can’t wait” when talking about waking up at 6am. I would typically use that phrase when talking about a trip to Europe, graduation, or a weekend that involves copious amounts of alcohol…But never about waking up early.
